Diversity at work

By Nicole Borja Mellos

The vacancies in the job market are increasing every day, and as a result, the number of job openings and the amount of messages candidates receive on LinkedIn are increasing as well

Our job as a recruiter or talent sourcer is to find the best talent in this competitive market. Those hidden gems that fit perfectly into a role and can build a real partnership with the company.

On the other hand, the trends of society are followed by the market. Everyone tries to adapt as best they can to meet the requirements. An example of one of these trends is the theme of diversity.

So how can we connect these two?

In a world where global changes and mixed cultures are becoming the norm, more and more companies are opening up to employ foreign people. In this way, they can match their lack of qualified people within their company and more and more companies are opting for diversity in their workforce.

We currently work with about 20 people at Successr, seven of whom are from a foreign country. Not only from Europe, but also from Latin America for example. All these people bring different perspectives and enrich the work with new insights and ideas. These new insights, in combination with the Dutch perspective that Successr already had, has caused Successr to grow enormously. The cause: an endless source of inspiration and motivation due to the diversity of people.

That’s why we try to bring the diversity that works so well for us to our customers as well. That sometimes requires a fresh perspective from a company: which is needed to keep up with the labor market. In this way they can still fulfill the most critical functions with talents that are not so obvious at first.

With a quick search on Facebook we find a group called “Expats in Eindhoven” with over 30,000 members. Can you imagine how many qualified professionals there are just here in Eindhoven who are totally overlooked?

There are so many groups of different nationalities to be found, in Eindhoven alone. There are Italians who live in the Netherlands, Romanians, Greek professionals and even entire Whatsapp groups with more than 200 members of, for example, Brazilian professionals.

All these people have come to the Netherlands especially to work for large high-tech companies, such as ASML and Philips. A significant proportion of them also have partners and friends with the same highly qualified background. These people often have difficulty finding a job because they do not speak Dutch yet; but are still in the process of taking classes.

The competition on the job market is fierce, and Dutch candidates have become more demanding as a result of this competition. You can check how many opportunities are missed to match the right companies to the right, qualified people because there is too little thinking outside the box.

There is a world beyond the traditional market, full of foreign professionals with great backgrounds ready to get started. It’s up to us to give them that chance to thrive!
